Pre-relieving cutting edges

mardi 1 décembre 2015

Invariably when I make a cutting tool I create the cutting edge and then spend time carefully trying to relieve the edge without damaging it.

I needed a 35° inc angle reamer, this time I got a bit smarter, cut the reliefs first and then cut the flutes.

This is a piece of 20mm 1020, I've put 6 flats on it much like sharpening a pencil.

I've turned the job 30° in the collet block and cut the flutes.

Harden with cherry red.

The reamer works well, the surface finish is OK for what the part needs to do.
