Well my pirate is finished. I learnt a couple of valuable lessons on this one.
I chose to treat the cutlass as an accessory, which made the carving easier. Although the end result doesn't look too bad the forearm should have been rotated down at the elbow to bring the handle of the cutlass much closer to the belt. Next time I would perhaps block in a cutlass handle to ensure the arm was properly positioned.
When I first cut in the eyes I was convinced I got them too far apart. In the end, despite a less than convincing bridge of the nose I feel the eyes are better too far apart than too close together.
Please feel free to constructively criticise!
