Newbee question ... What Lathe to start with.

I'm in the process of selling off my larger woodwork machines as they dont get enough use to justify keeping them.

However I do have another endeavor that requires some wood turning, something I've always wanted to do.



Initially I want to keep the outlay reasonably low. The two machines I'm looking at are the Tooline , which seems identical the the model GMC produced, or this mini lathe from the Toolshed.

I'm leaning towards the Toolshed option as you get more for you money in terms of build quality and accessories.

This set of chisels from Carbatec also looks like a good starting point, they do also offer a 3 piece set, and the prices seem reasonable.



Any thoughts appreciated.

Filling Cracks and Voids

Ladies and Gentlemen



I have my trusted remedies to fill voids and cracks, but I want to get a bit more arty. I have managed to collect about a kilo of brass filings from a Key cutting shop. I am hoping to fill voids etc using the brass and make it a feature.



Now, I am not 100% sure how to do it.



1. I could fill the hole with the brass and back fill it with medium CA glue???

2. Mix the CA glue with the brass filing then fill the void????

3. How do other people do it?

Bloodwood bowl

This is probably my most adventurous wing burl bowl yet.As you can see,the burl was deeply lobulated and had a black hole that I couldn't probe the depth of.To make matters worse,I made the wing too thin and it started to flex but I got there in the end.Unfortunatly there was quite a bit of tearout which was not evident until I had the finish on.

Maximum width across the wing is 370mm and the depth of the bowl is 70mm. The finish is about 5 coats of DO.

I am calling this bloodwood, although it looks nothing like the bloodwood bowl I posted a couple of weeks ago.It came from the same source and had the same corky bark typical of bloodwood.To me this looks typical of a redgum burl but is much lighter and softer.

Laminated plane body.

Hi all. I have started work on a new 9 inch coffin shaped toothing plane. I want to put a clear natural finish on this plane, so to add an extra highlight to its look I have added a Bubinga sole to the PNG Rosewood upper body. Its a visually pleasing match using 2 different wood species.



Both inside surfaces to be glued were worked with a toothing iron to maximise the bonding achieved with the Gorilla Glue adhesive.



I have no plans to make this post a long winded tutorial from start to finish so you can all rest easy.



The following photo's show the basic form of the plane body after its been marked out ready to be mortised.

The plane body has been taped up to protect the 90 * corners of the plane body while its been held in the bench vise during mortising out.

Stick welder query

I have a simple transformer welder plugged into a 15A circuit.

Every so often, when switching it on at the power point, it trips out the contact breaker in the fuse panel. It's a bit annoying to have to reset it each time it does that. If it switches successfully, no further problems and I can weld merrily away.

Is there some type of special contact breaker that I could fit, that can cope at switch on?
