Very figured timber but what is it?

mardi 1 septembre 2015

Hello,

My Dad was kind enough to give me a couple of boards that he came across recently, neither of us are sure what type of timber this is but we suspect Marri.
The boards were pretty dirty and dusty and had been stored for a long time, I suspect a verrrry long time.
Decided to pass one over the jointer and through the planer as I could see they had a nice grain pattern and was keen to find out what it would look like. It blew me away, never seen anything like it, the way the grain interlocks is awesome.
I use a segmented cutter on my combo machine and was surprised at the rough result after milling as I normally get a very smooth finish.

I've attached a few photos hoping that someone may be able to confirm whether or not this timber is Marri and is this type of figure known as fiddleback?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Regards
Bart
