Scarifying the lawn and raking out the thatch - Melbourne

Hi,
our lawn has so much thatch it is like walking on someone's afro. I'd planned to use the mower on it's lowest setting to scalp the lawn,
rake out all the thatch and let it regrow. It's couch. When would be a good time to do it? I'd read spring, but what month is a good time
to do it in Melboune?
