Router bit climbs while cutting

I have a big Triton 2 hp router under my router table for years now, and the internal springs are removed.

Today I was cutting dovetails on the Gifkins jig, using the Gifkins dovetail cutter bit and the Gifkins 1/4" adapter for the router 1/2" collet. After cutting 10 or so tails during the morning on various test pieces, I finally started work on my huon pine dovetail box.

The first end of the first side went beautifully, but as the other end was being cut there were some funny noises, and there was some difficulty cutting the last tail.

Removing the workpiece, I find that the bit has climbed higher out of the table with each tail cut, so that by the end of the last tail being cut, the bearing on the cutter was jamming against the workpiece and would not rise any further.

Looking at the attached photos, I have marked the attached photo showing the lower end of the board where the cuts were started. You can see the gradual rise in height of the cut compared to a line drawn at right angles across the board.

The bit could not be moved by hand, and the 1/2" collet was tight, needing a spanner to undo the collet to remove the adapter and bit. There was no dust or dirt inside the 1/2" collet.

Has anyone ever come across this problem before? I suspect a problem with either the Triton router collet moving up during operation, or the adapter moving up inside the collet during operation i.e., not tightened. Although it did need a large spanner to loosen it

Can anyone please suggest a possible solution?

fitting single phase motor to old 3 phase lathe

Hey all,
I've got myself on old lathe ( ex School, very solid ), which was 3 phase.

I'm wanting to source an equivalent single phase motor.

The old one was a 415V - 1HP motor which ran @ 1425 RPM.

I've removed the old pulley ( a 5 1/2 inch 4 step pulley ), and ideally was wanting to find a motor that would run on single phase, and at least 1 HP ( prefer 2 HP ).

Has anyone had experience in doing this? Any advice on where in Melbourne or Australia to source a motor? I have all the measurements for the shaft etc which is 19mm.

Cheers

Seb

Oil based polyurethane problem on pine

I've used polycrylic(water based poly) on pine before and it was easier to use. However when I used oil based polyurethane for this job, I've been experiencing with the finish. There are two problems.
1. There are patches that are glossy and some are matt. I'm presuming it's because the wood is not completely flat and some spots are soaking up the poly more.
2. Once the poly is dried, it leaves a surface like a waxed car. With uneven bumps here and there, as well as brush marks(even though I have used foam brushes).
Do I need to buff it out like a car to get the glossy even surface?

Any help will be great

Oscillating edge sander - is there a "best"?

Almost time to blow some more cassshhhhh.

Ilya is twisting my arm to go for a Sawstop, but I've also been thinking of getting an oscillating edge belt sander.

I do lootttttts of boxes and custom work. I've a good bobbin sander and Jet 6*9 Belt sander which is great.... but for some jobs it simply isn't big enough.

This one popped up while I was looking around, the Laguna jobbie: Laguna Oscillating Edge Sander - Gregory Machinery

Does anyone have any opinions on this machine or machines like it? Is there a feature I should be looking for that I'd regret not getting with the wrong purchase?
